Recognising your moments of playing the hero
Have you ever caught yourself in an emergency, thinking or saying, ‘I'll make it better’ or ‘I'll fix it’? Or when faced with a complex problem, you've uttered, ‘I can figure it out,’ or in conflict within your team or family, you've said, ‘Let's all get along’?
Maybe you've even declared, ‘I'll keep you from harm,’ when we assume a colleague or close one is powerless.
As a leader, whether in my professional or personal life, playing the Hero can be a blind spot for me. ‘I don't want my team to fail, and I don't want those close to me to feel pain.’ Heroes choose drama and stress by taking more than their share of responsibility. They seek appreciation, problems to fix, pain to relieve, or people to save. They seek to take away the 'painful' or 'challenging' experiences.
The Hero in us believes we can quickly control or change the situation, consequently disempowering the other person or group from having their own experience. By seeking temporary means to make the issue go away, our Hero's 'pay-off' is the belief that others will be better because of the solution put in place.
At Conscious Uprising, we offer a crucial step in great leadership: Embrace your conscious power, recognise your moments being the Hero, and learn to lead as a Coach. A Coach invites empowerment and facilitates progress.
Next time you find yourself viewing a situation as ‘a problem to be solved’…ask yourself ‘What is the opportunity to learn from this situation?’
Next time you experience yourself taking responsibility for someone else’s situation… step back and support the other person in taking 100% responsibility for their situation.
Next time you hear yourself telling someone what they should do… pause, ask questions and listen deeply.
A great leader drops the story that others (or themselves) need fixing and sees others as the creators of their own lives and experiences.
