How does my career serve what I want for my life?
This week, during my first meeting with a client, he expressed a fear of not having a clear answer to his own question: ‘What do I want to do with my career?’ I sensed some resistance and an internal struggle as he felt he 'should' have the answer.
Then, there was a pause in our discussion.
In the next breath, he confided that he was clear that as his career evolved, he would consider the relationship he wanted with his family, his health and his lifestyle. He was determined to stop living two separate lives. Noticeably, the energy in our conversation shifted, and his posture became more confident.
The light bulbs went on as we delved into a broader conversation about what his life would look like, encompassing not only his career but also his relationships, health, lifestyle and finances. We pondered what life would be like if he no longer had to balance work against play, and if he made decisions guided by both his heart and his mind.
The question ‘What do I want to do with my career?’ was transformed into ‘How does my career serve what I want for my life?'
With Conscious Uprising’s Leadership Equation, we recommend leaders write a narrative that projects themselves into the future, incorporating all aspects of life with a sense of adventure. They should set balanced goals that can be translated into actionable steps for today. By visualising and writing from the heart, leaders can reach a point where they can confidently say to themselves, ‘I have a full body yes’ to what it is they really want.
As you continue to empower yourself with this exercise, you’ll find the fun of re-visiting it every few years. From my experience, you’ll surprise yourself with what you achieve. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
